Every Second Chance Has A Story

Behind every horse at Hawkez Haven is a journey of patience, trust and quiet courage. These are the stories that remind us why rescue matters — and why we keep going.

Featured Story
Founding Horse of Hawkez Haven

Rip

Rain scald · Sores · Weight loss · Full rehabilitation

Before there was Hawkez Haven, there was Rip. He arrived carrying more than his own hardship — he carried the reason a sanctuary needed to exist at all. His recovery took months of steady care: treating rain scald and open sores, rebuilding lost weight and, hardest of all, earning back the quiet trust that neglect had taken from him.

Every horse who has walked through our gates since owes a piece of their story to him. Rip didn't just find a second chance — he made room for every second chance that followed.

Rip's Recovery Timeline
1
Arrival

Rain scald, sores & severe weight loss

Rip came to us in a state that broke our hearts — coat matted with rain scald, open sores, ribs sharp beneath his skin.

2
First weeks

Veterinary care & gentle handling

Vet checks, treatment for his skin, soft feed and quiet company. No pressure, no rushing — just showing him that hands could be kind.

3
Months in

Weight, coat and trust returning

Slowly the sores healed, the coat grew back, and his eye softened. He began to meet us at the gate instead of turning away.

4
Today

A sanctuary was built around him

Rip stands strong, calm and whole — the horse whose second chance became the beginning of every second chance that followed.

More Second Chances

Each horse arrives with a different story — and leaves a mark on every one of ours.

Kahu before rehabilitation
Kahu after rehabilitation
Weight gain & improved condition

Kahu

Kahu arrived thin, tired and carrying the weight of a hard chapter. With steady feed, consistent care and a paddock where he could simply rest, his body began to soften and fill out. Today he stands strong and shining — a quiet reminder that condition is rebuilt one honest day at a time.

Electra at Hawkez Haven
Hind leg injury & rehabilitation

Electra

Electra came to us guarded and sore, favouring an injured hind leg. Her rehabilitation has been slow and gentle — carefully managed movement, patient handling and days measured in tiny wins. Every step she takes now is one she chose to give us. Her trust is the greatest sign of healing.

Khan at Hawkez Haven
Severe hoof injury & recovery

Khan

Khan's hoof injury was severe, the kind that asks for months of careful farrier work, clean bandages and quiet stall time. He met each treatment with more grace than we deserved. Watching him walk sound again — hoof rebuilt, spirit intact — was a milestone we won't forget.

Hoof infection & wire injury

Kohan

Kohan arrived with a wire injury and a hoof infection that needed daily attention. What could have ended badly instead became a story of patience — soaking, wrapping, watching for the smallest change. He healed because we refused to look away, and because he decided to keep trying too.

Not Every Story Was Captured On Camera

Some journeys were lived quietly — but they mattered just as much.

Not every horse arrived with a camera nearby. Some of the most meaningful recoveries at Hawkez Haven happened in the small, unrecorded moments — a first willing step, a quiet lean-in, a bucket finished for the first time in weeks. Their stories deserve to be told, even without the photographs.

Joey at Hawkez Haven
Companion horse — history of lameness & poor feet

Joey

Joey is a quiet soul who came to us with a long history of lameness and neglected feet. His days now are simple ones — good hay, kind company and a farrier who knows him well. As our companion horse, he steadies the newer arrivals, offering the reassurance he was once given himself.

Pedro at Hawkez Haven
Laminitis recovery

Pedro

Pedro's laminitis journey has been long. Careful diet, soft ground, restricted grazing and daily observation became his new normal. He has taught us the discipline of slow recovery — that comfort is measured not in weeks, but in the quiet return of a horse willing to walk toward you again.

"Their stories continue with every hoofbeat, every sunrise, and every person who chooses to believe in second chances."
